Abstract
The article deals with the domestic and foreign experience of teaching a foreign language in ability - grouped class. The reasons for the emergence of heterogeneous groups common to different countries are revealed and the inevitability of their appearance is substantiated. The main content of the study is the recommendations of methodologists and practitioners of teaching foreign languages, who have developed many ways to solve problems associated with the different levels of students. The author's special attention is directed to the methodology of work in an ability grouped class of students studying a foreign language at a university.
