Abstract
This article explores the differences and similarities in the roles of teachers of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and English for General Purposes (EGP). It also highlights the importance of these differences and similarities for English Language Teaching (ELT), instructional materials and classroom activities. A review of previous research shows that EGP focuses on students 'general English ability, while ESP focuses on specific student skills and needs based on a detailed analysis of students' professional / academic needs. This distinction is important for ESP teachers. In addition to being a language teacher, the ESP practitioner must take on certain specific roles, such as course developer, material provider, co-author, researcher, evaluator, and cultural translator. As such, the study recommends organizing dedicated refresher / professional development courses for ESP teachers so that they can prepare for the challenging tasks associated with their work.
